We like to buy from friends. We like to have the inside track.
At last count, I have liked over 1,500 pages on my personal Facebook account and follow nearly two thousand Twitter accounts. That’s way, way too many. I linked to many of my friends’ pages in Part 1 of this post.
While marketing Release, I have employed all the usual tactics, but I’ve also done something somewhat unique in the world of self-publishing. I solicited two companies to fashion products inspired by those described in the novel. Here’s the second (the first is here):
Let me introduce you to Tiesta Tea.
When I approached co-founder Bobby Moynihan and asked him to consider my novel, with the intention that he ultimately craft a set of teas inspired by the ones described in the book, he barely hesitated. He and marketing maven Ashley Whitney are remarkable marketers (try saying that three times fast).
Want proof? Who’d have thought that five friends straight out of college could make loose leaf tea hip in a market seemingly saturated at all price points? Forbes magazine did. Inc. magazine did. The World Tea Expo did.
The early part of the story of how they took their passion to the marketplace and went up against long-established competition sounded very familiar to my search for an agent. Tiesta is beating the odds, not only with delicious and functional lines of products, but also with one cool marketing campaign after another. Is anyone else out there getting dozens of fans to send in their “Shelfie” pictures of themselves in front of Tiesta Tea displays? Does anyone else out there have a “My Best Tea and My Bestie” campaign?
Selfishly, I wanted to learn from these guys, and I knew that they’d be up for at least hearing my idea to co-market. What do people drink at book clubs (except wine… duh). Tea! And with five distinct teas described in Release, what better product to pair with the book than a set of teas to drink while reading and discussing it?
- Darjeeling Hojicha
- Lemon & Mulberry Leaf
- Caramel Rooibos
Between now and when the set is finalized…
